Grammar Assistant Privacy Policy

Grammar Assistant helps users correct and rewrite text they explicitly select on a web page.
Data the extension handles
- Text the user explicitly selects for correction or rewriting.
- The latest clipboard text, only when the user invokes the correction shortcut without selecting page text.
- An optional nearby page-context excerpt of up to 2,000 characters when the user enables Use nearby page context. The exact excerpt is displayed and can be edited before reuse.
- For direct last-word correction in an active text field, the target word and up to 500 characters from its current sentence. This limited context is used only after the user invokes the shortcut.
- Extra rewriting instructions entered by the user.
- The user's Gemini API key and extension preferences.
How data is used and shared
Selected text, optional page context, and extra instructions are sent directly from the extension to the Google Gemini API over HTTPS to generate the requested correction. This transfer is necessary for the extension's single purpose. Google processes this data under its applicable Gemini API terms and privacy policies.
The developer does not operate an intermediary server, receive these requests, sell user data, use it for advertising, or use it for creditworthiness or lending decisions.
Local storage
The Gemini API key and preferences are stored locally in the user's Chrome profile with chrome.storage.local. The extension does not intentionally collect this information on a developer-operated server. Removing the extension removes its locally stored extension data according to Chrome's behavior.
User control
- The extension processes text only after the user activates its keyboard shortcut.
- If no page text is selected, the same user-triggered shortcut reads the current clipboard text. The extension does not monitor clipboard changes in the background.
- When a clipboard-based suggestion is accepted, the extension writes the accepted text back to the clipboard.
- Nearby page context is disabled by default and can be enabled or disabled in the extension popup.
- When the shortcut is invoked with a caret in editable text and no selection, the extension directly corrects the last word and briefly displays the change. No confirmation panel is shown for this mode.
- When enabled, the context sent to Gemini is shown in the suggestion panel and can be edited.
- Users can replace their stored API key in the popup or remove extension data by uninstalling the extension.
Data retention
The developer does not retain selected text, page context, rewriting instructions, or API keys on developer-operated servers. Data sent to Google may be retained by Google according to the user's Gemini API plan and Google's applicable terms.
Security
Data sent to the Gemini API is transmitted using HTTPS. Users should avoid processing sensitive or confidential information, particularly when using a free API tier.
Changes
This policy may be updated when the extension's functionality or data practices change. The effective date above will be updated when material changes are made.
